Have you been to Ikea lately? I went earlier tonight and was really impressed with their kid section. Unfortunately most of their toys are not available online, but if you live nearby, get on over there and check it out. A lot of very simple, creative things that won't break the bank.
This bed is a good example. It grows with your child and has a great simple look that will work with all kinds of different bedding as s/he grows. - Stephanie S.
